The importance of baby teeth
Although primary teeth are eventually lost to make way for adult teeth, they play a highly important role in the development of your child’s smile, and as such should be looked after with great care. Baby teeth assist the development of an adult smile by:
- Saving room within the jaw for adult teeth to emerge in the correct position
- Preventing the deterioration of jaw bone material
- Preventing gum recession
This is why it is highly important to brush your child’s teeth morning and night, visit our dental practice every six months for a check-up and never put your baby to bed with a bottle of sugary drink (such as milk, juice or cordial).
You can even start to look after your child’s oral health prior to their first tooth erupting, just wipe their gums gently with a damp cloth. By doing this you can help to look after the health of their gums which in turn helps their first teeth.

Not only is visiting the dentist early important for the development of your child’s teeth, it is also beneficial for their oral hygiene habits. Bringing your child to the dentist at an early age can also help them to become familiar with the dentist. Your children can see that the dentist is just a place they go to ensure the health of their smile.
Instilling a sense of familiarity and comfort in your child will also help us help them with their oral hygiene habits. We can explain the importance of brushing and—eventually—flossing their teeth, while you show them how at home.
